About RRCS

summerheader

Reigate & Redhill Choral Society began in 1941 and has been part of the musical life of the area since its foundation.

1998 marked a significant turning point with the appointment of current Music Director, Peter Farrant.

Under Peter's direction Reigate & Redhill Choral Society has worked tirelessly to meet ambitious objectives that respond to the needs of the surrounding community with a variety of exciting workshops, festivals, tours, recordings, education initiatives and partnerships. The choir, a registered charity and affiliate of ‘Making Music’, has also performed extensively both in the UK and abroad.  Professional soloists and instrumentalists are regularly engaged.

75th Anniversary (1941 – 2016)

Reigate and Redhill Choral Society celebrates its 75th Anniversary in 2016.

It began in 1941 when a professional pianist, Geoffrey Tankard, called a meeting of local musical people at his house, Clairville, in Wray Common Road. From this began the RRCS whose early members included local residents and members of the armed forces stationed locally.

The first rehearsal was held in Redhill on 2nd December 1941 conducted by Dr W H Reed with 34 sopranos 29 altos 5 tenors and 11 basses. The first concert was the MESSIAH in April 1942 at Central Hall Redhill, which has long since disappeared.

The society then moved to its current base at Shaw’s Corner for its Tuesday evening for rehearsals taken by Geoffrey Tankard.

There follows a short summary of what the choir has performed over 75  Seasons  where they have performed and who has been their conductors.

Thanks to Gerry Moss and Ruth Hartgill both of whom have extensive historical Information and to the current RRCS website  on which can be found information about every concert performed since 1942.
